The Safety Officer is responsible to ensure that all legal compliance requirements are met, as required by the Mine Health and Safety Act. Ensure and assure legal and other compliances to minimize risk, litigation exposure and adverse publicity. The day-to-day management and operation of activities within the designated area of responsibility
Role Context
- Ensure compliance with the provision of the MHSA
- Observe and enforce any codes of practices, any instructions, procedures, directives, permissions, exemptions by the mine
- Provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of the employees within your area of responsibility
- Identify hazards and assess the related risks
- Report any contraventions
- In charge of the control and of the daily management of documents
- Responsible to ensure signed off documents, procedures & standards are scanned & kept in accordance with the mine’s document control SOP
- Inspect working places and machinery at intervals prescribed by the Regulations
- To report any threat or potential threat to the safety or health of any employee to the person in immediate charge of the working place or machinery in question
- Facilitate the investigation on any incident or accident
- Verify the implementation of corrective measures
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of the SHE Management System
- Ensure appropriate information is made available for management reviews
- Keep records safe and available for inspections
- Assist in conducting internal and external audits
- Assist in co-ordinating revisions, updating, approval, consultation and distribution of standard instructions, task procedures, Codes of Practice, rules, managerial instructions, risk assessments, exemptions, approvals, and permissions
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications:
- Grade 12
- National Diploma in Safety Management
- COMSOC 1 & 2
- Samtrac/SHEMTRAC or equivalent certificate
- Incident/Accident Investigation Training
- Legal Liability Training
Job specific experience:
- 3 years’ experience in Mining environment
- Basic Computer Literacy
- Medically Fit
- Valid Driver’s License (code 08)
- COMSOC
- NEBOSH or SAMTRAC
- Good knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act
- 2-5 years as a risk officer in the mining industry
